DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 200 PM PDT (2100 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Rachel was located near latitude 20.3 North, longitude 117.1 West. Rachel is moving toward the west near 8 mph (13 km/h) and a continued westward to west-northwestward motion is expected for the next several days. Maximum sustained winds are near 90 mph (150 km/h) with higher gusts. Fluctuations in strength are possible over the next couple of days, with gradual weakening beginning by the middle part of the week. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 973 mb (28.74 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by Rachel will continue to affect the coast of the Baja California Peninsula for the next couple of days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local weather office.
