SUMMARY OF WATCHES AND WARNINGS IN EFFECT: A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for... * The Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Maro Reef to Lisianski Island A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area, in this case within the next 12 to 24 hours. Interests elsewhere within the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument west of Lisianski Island should monitor the progress of Nolo. For storm information specific to your area, please monitor products issued by your local National Weather Service forecast office. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 800 AM HST (1800 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Nolo was located near latitude 23.2 North, longitude 172.0 West. Nolo is moving faster toward the west near 16 mph (26 km/h). A mainly westward motion with an additional increase in forward speed is expected during the next few days. On the forecast track, the center of Nolo will continue to move through the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument but remain just south of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands west of Maro Reef. Nolo is expected to cross the International Date Line by Sunday midday Hawaiian Time. Satellite images indicate that maximum sustained winds have increased to near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher gusts. Nolo is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next day or so, followed by gradual weakening beginning on Monday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles (240 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 959 mb (28.32 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- WIND: Tropical storm conditions will continue within the Tropical Storm Warning area from Maro Reef to Lisianski Island through today. SURF: Large waves associated with Nolo will continue to affect the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument over the next several days. The surf will likely inundate some of the low-lying atolls from Maro Reef to Lisianski Island. Please consult products from your local weather office.
