SUMMARY OF WATCHES AND WARNINGS IN EFFECT: A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for... * The Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Nihoa to Lisianski Island, including French Frigate Shoals and Maro Reef A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area within the next 36 hours. Interests elsewhere within the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument west of Lisianski Island should monitor the progress of Nolo. For storm information specific to your area, please monitor products issued by your local National Weather Service forecast office. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 800 AM HST (1800 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Nolo was located near latitude 23.3 North, longitude 167.4 West. Nolo is moving toward the west-northwest near 6 mph (9 km/h). A westward or west-northwestward motion with an increase in forward speed is expected during the next few days. On the forecast track, the center of Nolo will continue to move through the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument but remain just south of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands west of French Frigate Shoals. Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher gusts. Strengthening is forecast, and Nolo is expected to become a hurricane later today and a major hurricane by early Sunday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 987 mb (29.15 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- WIND: Tropical storm conditions will continue within the Tropical Storm Warning area from Nihoa to Maro Reef through early Saturday. Farther west, tropical storm conditions are expected from Maro Reef to Lisianski Island by Saturday. SURF: Large waves associated with Nolo will continue to affect the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument over the next several days. The surf will likely inundate some of the low-lying atolls, especially from French Frigate Shoals to Maro Reef into the weekend, then from Maro Reef to Lisianski Island during the weekend.
