DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK

At 800 PM MST (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Rachel was located 
near latitude 19.5 North, longitude 109.9 West. Rachel is moving 
toward the west-northwest near 3 mph (6 km/h), and this slow 
westward to west-northwestward motion is expected during the next 
couple of days.
 
Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph (195 km/h) with higher
gusts. Rachel is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson 
Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional strengthening is forecast within 
the next 24 h, followed by gradual weakening this weekend.
 
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles
(240 km).
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 950 mb (28.06 inches).
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

SURF: Swells generated by Rachel will affect the coast of 
west-central Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula through the 
weekend. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and 
rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local
