DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 500 PM HST (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Karina was located near latitude 18.3 North, longitude 130.8 West. Karina is moving toward the west near 12 mph (19 km/h) and a westward to west-northwestward motion is expected during the next few days. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 140 mph (220 km/h) with higher gusts. Karina is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Gradual weakening is expected during the next several days. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles (205 km).
