DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
----------------------
At 1100 AM HST (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Lowell was 
located near latitude 13.5 North, longitude 150.3 West. Lowell is 
moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph (17 km/h). A west to 
west-northwest motion is expected to continue during the next 
several days.
 
Satellite imagery indicates that maximum sustained winds have 
increased to near 90 mph (150 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional 
strengthening is forecast during the next day or two, and Lowell is 
expected to become a major hurricane on Wednesday.
 
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles
(150 km).
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 977 mb (28.85 inches).
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND
----------------------
SURF: Swells generated by Lowell are likely to affect portions of
the Hawaiian Islands beginning on Wednesday. These swells are
likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
