DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
----------------------
At 200 PM PDT (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Karina was located
near latitude 17.2 North, longitude 123.2 West. Karina is moving
toward the west near 9 mph (15 km/h). A slower westward to
west-northwestward motion is expected during the next few days.
 
Maximum sustained winds are near 90 mph (150 km/h) with higher
gusts. Steady to rapid strengthening seems likely, and Karina is
forecast to become a major hurricane in a day or so.
 
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 5 miles (10 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles
(110 km).
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 978 mb (28.88 inches).
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

SURF: Swells generated by Karina will affect portions of the coast
of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula for the next
couple of days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening
surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your
local weather office.
