DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK

At 200 PM PDT (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Karina was 
located near latitude 16.4 North, longitude 118.8 West. Karina is 
moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h), followed by 
a more westerly motion over the next day or two.
 
Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher 
gusts.  Strengthening is forecast during the next several days. 
Karina is forecast to become a hurricane within the next day and 
could become a major hurricane early next week.
 
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 230 miles (370 km)
from the center. The Mexican Navy weather station on Clarion Island 
recently reported a wind gust of 55 mph (88 km/h) in one of 
Karina's outer rain bands.
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 987 mb (29.15 inches).
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND
----------------------
SURF:  Swells generated by Karina will begin to affect portions of
the coast of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula
this weekend.  These swells are likely to cause life-threatening
surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your
local weather office.
