Preparations to protect life\nand property should be rushed to completion.\n \nA Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible\nwithin the watch area. A watch is typically issued 48 hours\nbefore the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force\nwinds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or\ndangerous.\n \nFor storm information specific to your area, please monitor\nproducts issued by your national meteorological service.\n \n \nDISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK\n----------------------\nAt 300 PM CST (2100 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Simon was located \nnear latitude 19.6 North, longitude 105.8 West. Simon is moving \ntoward the north-northwest near 6 mph (9 km/h) and this general \nmotion is expected to continue over the next couple of days with a \ngradual turn to the north and north-northeast on Tuesday into \nWednesday. On the forecast track, Simon is expected to pass near the \ncoast of west-central Mexico this afternoon and evening before \nmoving a little farther away on Monday. Simon is then forecast to \nturn back towards the coast of Mexico on Wednesday.\n \nMaximum sustained winds have decreased to near 130 mph (215 km/h) \nwith higher gusts. Simon is a category 4 hurricane on the \nSaffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional weakening is \nforecast but Simon is still expected to be a strong hurricane as it \npasses near the coast of west-central Mexico this afternoon and \nevening. Simon is now expected to remain a hurricane when it moves \nfarther offshore again on Monday and Tuesday.\n \nHurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the\ncenter and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles\n(95 km).\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 947 mb (27.97 inches). \n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Simon can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header MIATCDEP5 and WMO header WTPZ45 KNHC.\n \nWIND: Hurricane conditions are likely occuring in the Hurricane \nWarning area, with hurricane conditions spreading northward later \nthis evening into Monday.\n \nHurricane conditions are possible within the watch area by \nWednesday, with tropical storm conditions possible by Tuesday night.\n \nRAINFALL: Simon is expected to produce additional rainfall totals of \n2 to 4 inches with isolated additional amounts of 8 inches over \nportions of the states of Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa \nthrough early Thursday. Isolated maximum storm totals of 30 inches \nare possible over portions of the states of Michoacan, Colima, and \nJalisco.
