Rachel is\nmoving toward the northeast near 22 mph (35 km/h). A northeastward \nto north-northeastward motion with an increase in forward speed is \nexpected through Sunday. On the forecast track, the center of Rachel \nis expected to approach northern Baja California today and move \nonshore tonight. Rachel's post-tropical remnants will then move \nacross the southwestern United States on Sunday.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 60 mph (95 km/h) with higher gusts.\nSome strengthening is possible through tonight, but rapid weakening \nis expected after Rachel moves inland over Baja California and the \nsouthwestern United States on Sunday. Rachel is likely to become \npost-tropical by Sunday morning.\n \nTropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles (240 km)\nfrom the center.\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 992 mb (29.30 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Rachel can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header MIATCDEP3 and WMO header WTPZ43 KNHC.\n \nWIND: Tropical storm conditions are expected to reach portions of\nthe Baja California Peninsula within the Tropical Storm Warning area\nbeginning this evening and continuing into Sunday morning. Tropical\nstorm conditions are also possible within the Tropical Storm Watch\narea in extreme Southern California, eastern Baja California, and\nportions of northwest Mexico beginning tonight or early Sunday.\nStrong gusty winds associated with the system are expected to spread\nover interior portions of the Southwest United States, especially in\nareas of higher terrain, tonight through early next week.\n \nRAINFALL: Rachel will bring 1 to 3 inches of rain to portions of \nBaja California this weekend.\n\nRachel and its associated moisture will also bring rainfall of 1 to \n3 inches, with maximum amounts locally up to 5 inches in portions of \nthe Southwest United States this weekend. This will lead to \nincreasing coverage of rainfall and potential for significant flash \nand urban flooding.\n\nFor a complete depiction of forecast rainfall associated with \nRachel, please see the National Weather Service Storm Total Rainfall \nGraphic available at\nhurricanes.gov/graphics_ep3.shtml?rainqpf and the Flash Flood Risk \ngraphic at hurricanes.gov/graphics_ep3.shtml?ero.\n \nSURF: Waves generated by Rachel will continue to build along the\ncoasts of Southern California and northern Baja California today.\nThese waves, combined with an incoming long-period southerly swell,\nwill cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Coastal\nflooding and erosion are expected to worsen tonight into Sunday\nmorning as the highest waves coincide with the high tides and water\nlevels that are already running well above predicted levels.\nModerate to major coastal flooding is expected, with hazardous\ncoastal conditions continuing into early next week.
