Simon is moving\ntoward the north near 5 mph (7 km/h), and this general motion with \nis forecast through the weekend.  On the forecast track, Simon is \nexpected to be near or just inland of the west-central coast of \nMexico later today or Sunday.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 140 mph (220 km/h) with higher\ngusts.  Small Simon is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson\nHurricane Wind Scale.  Additional rapid strengthening is expected \nduring the next day or so.  Simon is forecast to approach the of \nwest-central Mexico as a major hurricane this evening or Sunday.\n \nHurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from\nthe center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 80\nmiles (130 km).\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 945 mb (27.91 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Simon can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header MIATCDEP5 and WMO header WTPZ45 KNHC.\n \nWIND:  Hurricane conditions are expected in the Hurricane Warning\narea this evening or Sunday, with tropical storm conditions\nexpected later this morning.  Hurricane conditions are possible in \nthe Hurricane Watch area beginning Sunday afternoon, with tropical \nstorm conditions possible as soon as Sunday morning.  Tropical \nstorm conditions are possible within the Tropical Storm Watch area \nbeginning later this morning.\n \nRAINFALL: Simon is expected to produce rainfall totals of 10 to 20\ninches over portions of southwestern Mexico, with isolated maximum\ntotals of 30 inches possible across portions of Michoacan, Colima,\nJalisco and Nayarit through Sunday.
