Simon is moving\ntoward the northwest near 5 mph (7 km/h).  A turn to the\nnorth is forecast by early Saturday.  On the forecast track, the \ncore of Simon is expected to approach the coast of southwestern and \nwest-central Mexico on Saturday.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher\ngusts.  Rapid intensification is forecast, and Simon is expected to \nbecome a very dangerous category 4 hurricane before it\nreaches the coast of Mexico.\n \nHurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from\nthe center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90\nmiles (150 km).\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 985 mb (29.09 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Simon can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header MIATCDEP5 and WMO header WTPZ45 KNHC.\n \nWIND:  Hurricane conditions are expected in the warning area\nSaturday afternoon or evening, with tropical storm conditions\nexpected Saturday morning. Tropical storm conditions are possible\nwithin the Tropical Storm Watch area beginning later today.\n \nRAINFALL: Simon is expected to produce rainfall totals of 8 to 15\ninches over portions of southwestern Mexico, with isolated maximum\ntotals of 25 inches possible across portions of Michoacan, Colima\nand Jalisco through Sunday.
