Simon is \nmoving toward the west near 5 mph (7 km/h) followed by a turn toward \nthe north-northwest or north on Friday and Saturday. On the forecast \ntrack, Simon is expected to approach the coast of southwestern and \nwest-central Mexico late Saturday.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 65 mph (100 km/h) with higher\ngusts. Rapid strengthening is forecast, and Simon is \nexpected to become a hurricane later today and a very dangerous \ncategory 4 hurricane before it reaches the coast of Mexico.\n \nTropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km)\nfrom the center.\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 995 mb (29.39 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Simon can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header MIATCDEP5 and WMO header WTPZ45 KNHC.\n \nWIND:  Hurricane conditions are possible within the hurricane watch\narea by Saturday night, with tropical storm conditions beginning on\nSaturday. Tropical storm conditions are possible within the\ntropical storm watch area beginning Friday.\n \nRAINFALL:  Simon is expected to produce rainfall totals of 8 to 15\ninches over portions of southwestern Mexico, with isolated maximum\ntotals between 15 and 25 inches possible across portions of\nMichoacan, Colima and Jalisco through Sunday.
