Tropical Storm Watches could be required for a portion of \nthis area by tonight. \n \n \nDISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK\n----------------------\nAt 800 AM PDT (1500 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Rachel was \nlocated near latitude 22.1 North, longitude 124.2 West. Rachel is \nmoving toward the west-northwest near 7 mph (11 km/h). This general \nmotion is expected to continue over the next day, before a sharp \nturn to the northeast, along with an increase in forward speed, \noccurs on Saturday. On the forecast track the center of Rachel is \nexpected to approach the northern portion of Baja California on \nlate Saturday.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher\ngusts. Gradual weakening is expected over the next few days, but \nRachel is still expected to be at tropical storm strength when it \napproaches northern Baja California.\n \nTropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km)\nfrom the center.\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 985 mb (29.09 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Rachel can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header MIATCDEP3 and WMO header\nWTPZ43 KNHC.\n \nSURF: Swells partly generated by Rachel will build along the coast\nof Southern California and northern Baja California through the\nweekend.
