A recent WSF-M microwave pass also shows \nimproved curved banding structure. The latest subjective Dvorak \nclassification from TAFB was 3.0/45 kt, and the initial intensity \nhas been raised to 45 kt accordingly, and this could be \nconservative.\n \nEnvironmental conditions are quite favorable for significant\nintensification. The SHIPS Rapid Intensity Index indicates greater\nthan a 50 percent chance of 55 kt of strengthening over the next \n48 h. Most of the hurricane regional models, as well as HCCA and \nGDMI show significant intensification over the next couple of days, \nand the NHC intensity forecast has been increased accordingly. The \nNHC forecast now indicates a 110 kt intensity at 60 and 72 h, and \nthis is at the high end of the model suite, in good agreement with \nthe HCCA model.\n \nThe initial motion is west-northwestward, or 290 degrees at 8 kt. \nSimon is likely to continue this general west-northwestward motion \nfor the next day or so, to the south of a weak mid-level ridge. By \nFriday, the system should turn northwestward and then northward \nahead of a 500 mb trough approaching Baja California. In 3-5 days, \nthe cyclone should move generally northward between a mid-level \nanticyclone and the trough near Baja California. The official \nforecast track has been shifted a bit to the left from 12-60 hours, \nbut is nearly on top of the previous track from days 3 to 5, and is \nquite similar to the latest HFIP corrected consensus approach \n(HCCA). The forecast takes Simon toward the coast of west-central \nMexico as a dangerous major hurricane in a few days. There is a \nfair amount of spread in the guidance, and that is important to note \nbecause Simon is forecast to be moving nearly parallel to the \ncoastline in about 72 hours when it nears west-central Mexico. A \ntrack farther west would keep Simon over water longer, but a track \nfarther east would mean a sooner landfall.\n \n \nKey Messages:\n \n1. Simon is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by Thursday \nnight and approach the west-central coast of Mexico as a major \nhurricane on Saturday. There is a risk of dangerous wind and storm \nsurge impacts along portions of this coast over the weekend and into \nearly next week, and watches could be required overnight into early \nThursday.\n \n2. Heavy rainfall associated with Simon will impact portions of\nsouthwestern Mexico later this week and into the weekend. This\nrainfall may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides,\nespecially in areas of steep terrain.\n \n3. Swells will affect portions of the southwestern and west-central\ncoast of Mexico through the weekend. These swells are likely to\ncause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
