Rachel is moving \ntoward the northwest near 10 mph (17 km/h). A northwestward motion \nat a slower forward speed is expected during the next day or two, \nfollowed by a turn toward the west-northwest and west later this \nweek. On the forecast track, the center of Rachel is expected to \nmove away from mainland Mexico and south of the Baja California \nPeninsula through Thursday.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher \ngusts.  Rapid strengthening is expected today, and Rachel could \nbecome a major hurricane within the next day or so.\n \nHurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from\nthe center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 160\nmiles (260 km).\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 979 mb (28.91 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Rachel can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header MIATCDEP3 and WMO header WTPZ43 KNHC.\n \nWIND: Tropical storm conditions will continue in portions of the\nwarning area this morning. Tropical storm conditions are possible\nin the watch area this morning.\n \nRAINFALL: Rachel is expected to produce rainfall totals of 4 to 8\ninches, with isolated maximum totals of 12 inches across coastal\nportions of the Mexican states of Guerrero, Michoac\u00e1n, Colima and\nJalisco.
