A warning is typically issued 36\nhours before the anticipated first occurrence of\ntropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside\npreparations difficult or dangerous. Preparations to protect life\nand property should be rushed to completion.\n \nA Hurricane Watch may be required for additional portions of the\nPapahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument later today.\n \nFor storm information specific to your area, including possible\ninland watches and warnings, please monitor products issued by your\nlocal National Weather Service forecast office.\n \n \nDISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK\n----------------------\nAt 200 AM HST (1200 UTC), the center of Hurricane Nolo was located \nnear latitude 20.1 North, longitude 164.0 West. Nolo is moving \ntoward the north near 10 mph (17 km/h). On the forecast track, the \ncenter of Nolo will remain well southwest and west of the main \nHawaiian Islands. Nolo will continue to move northward across the \nPapahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument today. On Wednesday, Nolo \nwill slowly turn toward the west, and continue generally westward \nthrough the latter part of the week.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher \ngusts. Nolo is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson \nHurricane Wind Scale. Weakening is forecast over the next couple of \ndays, followed by some re-intensification during the latter part of \nthis week.\n \nHurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from\nthe center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175\nmiles (280 km).\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 958 mb (28.29 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nWIND: Hurricane conditions are expected in the Hurricane Warning\narea in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument by Wednesday,\nwith tropical storm conditions likely starting later today.\n \nRAINFALL: Outer bands east of Nolo\u2019s track will produce 3 to 6 \ninches of rain across Kauai and Niihau through Thursday. This \nrainfall could produce areas of flooding and mudslides, especially \nin areas of steep terrain.\n \nSURF: Swells generated by Nolo will affect south- and west-facing \nshores of the main Hawaiian Islands for the next few days. These \nswells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current \nconditions. Large surf associated with Nolo will continue to affect \nthe Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument over the next several \ndays. These large waves will likely inundate some of the low-lying \natolls, especially from French Frigate Shoals to Nihoa.
