Preparations to protect life and property should be\ncompleted or rushed to completion shortly.\n \nA Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible\nwithin the watch area, in this case over the next 12 hours.\n \nA Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are\nexpected somewhere within the warning area, in this case over the\nnext 12 hours.\n \nInterests in the remainder of Baja California Sur, and the remainder\nof Sonora and northern Sinaloa should monitor the progress of Polo.\n \nFor storm information specific to your area, please monitor\nproducts issued by your national meteorological service.\n \n \nDISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK\n----------------------\nAt 200 PM MST (2100 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Polo was located\nnear latitude 25.0 North, longitude 113.0 West. Polo is moving\ntoward the northeast near 12 mph (19 km/h) and this motion with\ngradual acceleration is expected this evening through Tuesday. On\nthe forecast track, the center of Polo is expected to move inland\nalong the coast of Baja California Sur later this evening, then move\ninland into southern Sonora on Tuesday morning.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher \ngusts. Polo is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson \nHurricane Wind Scale.  Fluctuations in intensity are possible this \nafternoon, but Polo is forecast to be at or near major hurricane \nstrength when it makes landfall on the west coast of Baja California \nSur this evening. Polo is also expected to be a hurricane when it \nmakes landfall in mainland Mexico early Tuesday morning. Rapid \nweakening is expected after Polo moves well inland into mainland \nMexico. \n \nHurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the\ncenter and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles\n(165 km).\n \nThe minimum central pressure estimated by earlier aircraft \ndropsonde data is 963 mb (28.44 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Polo can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header MIATCDEP2 and WMO header WTPZ42 KNHC.\n \nWIND: Hurricane conditions are expected within the warning area \nalong the west coast of Baja California Sur shortly, with tropical \nstorm conditions ongoing in the southern portion of the warning \narea. These conditions are expected to spread northward and eastward \nacross Baja California Sur during the next few hours. Hurricane \nconditions are expected within the Hurricane Warning area and \npossible in the watch area in mainland northwestern Mexico early \nTuesday with tropical storm conditions expected to begin tonight.\n\nA Wind Advisory is in effect for portions of southern New Mexico and \nfar western Texas where strong gusty winds are possible late Tuesday \nand Tuesday night in association with Polo\u2019s remnants. Refer to \nproducts issued by your local National Weather Service Forecast \nOffice for additional information. \n \nRAINFALL: Polo is expected to produce rainfall totals of 6 to 12\ninches across portions of Baja California Sur. Rainfall totals of 4\nto 6 inches with maximum totals of 8 inches are expected across\nsouthern and central portions of Sonora.
