A watch is typically issued 48 hours\nbefore the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force\nwinds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or\ndangerous.\n \nAdditional watches may be required for portions of the\nPapahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.\n \nFor storm information specific to your area, including possible\ninland watches and warnings, please monitor products issued by your\nlocal National Weather Service forecast office.\n \n \nDISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK\n----------------------\nAt 800 PM HST (0600 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Nolo was located\nnear latitude 16.4 North, longitude 160.8 West.  Nolo is moving\ntoward the west-northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h).  A gradual turn \ntoward the northwest is forecast tonight, with a continued \nnorthwestward motion into Tuesday.  On the forecast track, the \ncenter of Nolo will remain well south and southwest of the main \nHawaiian Islands but will approach the Papahanaumokuakea Marine \nNational Monument on Tuesday.\n \nMaximum sustained winds have increased to near 150 mph (240 km/h) \nwith higher gusts.  Nolo is a category 4 hurricane on the \nSaffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.  Additional strengthening is \nexpected during the next day or so.\n \nHurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from\nthe center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150\nmiles (240 km).\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 934 mb (27.58 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nWIND: Hurricane conditions are possible in the Hurricane Watch area\nin the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument by Wednesday, with\ntropical storm conditions possible by Tuesday.\n \nSURF: Swells generated by Nolo will be affecting south-facing \nshores of the main Hawaiian Islands for the next few days. These \nswells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current\nconditions.  Large surf associated with Nolo will affect the\nPapahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument beginning on Monday.\nThese large waves will likely inundate some of the low-lying atolls,\nespecially from French Frigate Shoals to Nihoa.
