A watch is typically issued 48 hours\nbefore the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force\nwinds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or\ndangerous.\n \nAdditional watches may be required for portions of the \nPapahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.\n \nFor storm information specific to your area, including possible\ninland watches and warnings, please monitor products issued by your\nlocal National Weather Service forecast office.\n \n \nDISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK\n----------------------\nAt 1100 AM HST (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Nolo was located \nnear latitude 16.2 North, longitude 159.3 West. Nolo is moving \ntoward the west near 12 mph (19 km/h). A turn toward the northwest \nis expected by tonight, with this general motion continuing through \nTuesday.  On the forecast track, the center of Nolo will remain well \nsouth and southwest of the main Hawaiian Islands but will approach \nthe Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument in a couple of days.\n \nMaximum sustained winds have increased to near 115 mph (185 km/h) \nwith higher gusts.  Nolo is a category 3 hurricane on the \nSaffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.  Nolo is forecast to \nstrengthen further and reach its peak intensity by Monday. \nIn about 2 days, a gradual weakening trend is expected to \nbegin.\n \nHurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the\ncenter and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles\n(240 km).\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure based on aircraft data is \n966 mb (28.53 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Nolo can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header HFOTCDCP2 and WMO header WTPA42 PHFO.\n \nWIND: Strong and gusty winds are possible for the main Hawaiian \nIslands through this afternoon. Hurricane conditions are possible in \nthe Hurricane Watch area in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National \nMonument by Wednesday, with tropical storm conditions possible by \nTuesday. Strong and gusty winds are expected for all the Hawaiian \nIsland through today.\n\nSURF: Swells generated by Nolo are affecting exposed east- and \nsouth-facing shores of the main Hawaiian Islands through the next \nfew days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and \nrip current conditions. Large surf associated with Nolo will affect \nthe Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument beginning on Monday. \nThese large waves will likely inundate some of the low-lying atolls, \nespecially from French Frigate Shoals to Nihoa.
