A watch is typically issued 48 hours before\nthe anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds,\nconditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous.\n \nA Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are\nexpected somewhere within the warning area, generally within 36\nhours.\n \nA Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are\npossible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.\n \nInterests in the remainder of Baja California Sur, and the remainder\nof Sonora and northern Sinaloa should monitor the progress of Polo.\n \nFor storm information specific to your area, please monitor\nproducts issued by your national meteorological service.\n \n \nDISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK\n----------------------\nAt 200 AM MST (0900 UTC), the center of Hurricane Polo was located\nnear latitude 20.3 North, longitude 113.6 West. Polo is moving\ntoward the north-northwest near 10 mph (17 km/h). A turn toward the\nnorth is expected later today, followed by a turn toward the\nnortheast on Monday. On the forecast track, Polo is expected to\napproach the west coast of Baja California Sur on Monday, move\nacross the peninsula Monday night and then approach northwestern\nmainland Mexico by early Tuesday.\n \nMaximum sustained winds remain near 120 mph (195 km/h) with higher\ngusts. Polo is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson\nHurricane Wind Scale. Additional weakening is expected during the\nnext few days, but Polo is forecast to remain a hurricane when it\napproaches Baja California Sur on Monday.\n \nHurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the\ncenter and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles\n(205 km).\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 952 mb (28.12 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Polo can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header MIATCDEP2 and WMO header WTPZ42 KNHC.\n \nWIND: Hurricane conditions are expected within the warning area\nalong the west coast of Baja California Sur by Monday afternoon,\nwith tropical storm conditions possible in the southern portion of\nthe warning area by tonight into early Monday. These conditions\nare expected to spread northward during the day on Monday and then\neastward across Baja California Sur by Monday evening. Hurricane\nconditions are possible within the Hurricane Watch area in mainland\nnorthwestern Mexico on Tuesday.\n \nRAINFALL: Polo is expected to produce rainfall totals of 4 to 8\ninches with maximum amounts of 10 inches across portions of Baja\nCalifornia Sur. Near the coast, the surge will be\naccompanied by large and destructive waves.\n \nSURF: Swells generated by Polo will continue affecting the coast of\nsouthwestern Mexico, west-central Mexico, and Baja California Sur\nduring the next couple of days. These swells will spread northward\nalong the coast of the Baja California Peninsula through the\nremainder of the weekend. These swells are likely to cause\nlife-threatening surf, rip currents, and coastal flooding.
