Watches may be required for portions\nof the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument on Sunday.\n \n \nDISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK\n----------------------\nAt 500 PM HST (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Nolo was located\nnear latitude 16.7 North, longitude 156.5 West. Nolo is moving\ntoward the west near 8 mph (13 km/h) and this motion is expected to\ncontinue through Sunday. A turn toward the northwest is expected\nSunday night, with this general motion continuing through Tuesday.\nOn the forecast track, the center of Nolo will remain well south\nand southwest of the main Hawaiian Islands.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 90 mph (150 km/h) with higher\ngusts.  Nolo is predicted to strengthen into a major hurricane on \nSunday or Sunday night and reach its peak intensity by Monday. \nThereafter, steady weakening is expected.\n \nHurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the\ncenter and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles\n(240 km).\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 969 mb (28.62 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Nolo can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header HFOTCDCP2 and WMO header WTPA42 PHFO.\n \nWIND: Strong and gusty winds are possible for all of the Hawaiian \nIslands through the weekend, although the core winds of Nolo will \nstay to the south.\n \nRAINFALL: For the eastern and southern portions of the Big Island,\nNolo will produce additional rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches, with\nisolated maximum amounts of 4 inches. Storm totals through Sunday\nwill range between 10 and 15 inches with isolated maximum amounts of\n20 inches. Additional areas of flooding and mudslides will be\npossible, especially in areas of steep terrain.\n \nFor the western portions of the Big Island, rainfall totals of an\ninch or less are expected. For eastern Maui, additional rainfall\ntotals of 1 to 2 inches are expected, bringing storm totals to 4 to\n8 inches. These swells are likely\nto cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
