Nolo is moving \ntoward the west near 5 mph (7 km/h) and is expected to accelerate \nwestward through the weekend. Nolo is predicted to strengthen into a major hurricane on \nSunday and peak in intensity by early Monday. Thereafter, steady \nweakening is expected.\n \nHurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the\ncenter and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles\n(240 km).\n \nThe minimum central pressure based on aircraft data is 977 mb (28.85 \ninches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Nolo can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header HFOTCDCP2 and WMO header WTPA42 PHFO.\n \nWIND: Tropical storm conditions are occurring on portions of the Big\nIsland and are possible in Maui County in areas of steep terrain.\nStrong and gusty winds are possible for all of the Hawaiian Islands\nthrough the weekend.\n \nRAINFALL: For the eastern and southern portions of the Big Island,\nNolo will produce additional rainfall totals 3 to 6 inches, bringing\nstorm totals to 10 to 20 inches with isolated maximum amounts of 25\ninches. This rainfall could produce significant, life-threatening\nflooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain.\n \nFor the western portions of the Big Island, rainfall totals of 1 to\n2 inches are expected. For eastern Maui, additional rainfall totals\nof 1 to 2 inches are expected, bringing storm totals to 4 to 8\ninches. Life-threatening flooding and mudslides are possible,\nespecially in areas of high terrain.\n \nAcross the remainder of the Hawaiian Islands, maximum storm total\nrainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are expected.\n \nFor a complete depiction of forecast rainfall associated with Nolo,\nplease see the National Weather Service Storm Total Rainfall Graphic\navailable at hurricanes.gov/graphics_cp2.shtml?rainqpf\n \nSTORM SURGE: The threat of significant storm surge has diminished,\nyet water levels along the coast will remain elevated through\nupcoming tide cycles due to persistent, dangerous wave action.\n \nSURF: Swells generated by Nolo are affecting exposed east- and\nsouth-facing shores of the Big Island and are expected to spread\nwestward and build through the weekend. These swells are likely\nto cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
