Gonzalo is\nmoving toward the north near 12 mph (19 km/h). A northward to\nnorth-northwestward motion is expected through tonight, followed by\na slower north-northwestward motion over the weekend. On the\nforecast track, the center will pass near the northeastern portion \nof the Cabo Verde Islands tonight and move north of the Cabo Verde \nIslands on Saturday. \n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts.\nLittle change in strength is expected tonight. Weakening is \nexpected to begin by Saturday morning and continue through the \nweekend. Gonzalo is forecast to become a post-tropical remnant \nlow by Sunday. \n \nTropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles (335 km) \nprimarily to the northeast of the center. The official observing \nstation on Sal in the Cabo Verde Islands recently reported a \nsustained wind of 31 mph (50 km/h) with a gust to 43 mph (69 km/h).\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 1000 mb (29.53 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Gonzalo can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header MIATCDAT2 and WMO header WTNT42 KNHC.\n \nWIND: Tropical storm conditions will continue over portions of\nthe Cabo Verde Islands tonight.\n \nRAINFALL: Tropical Storm Gonzalo is expected to produce rainfall \ntotals of 1 to 3 inches (25 to 75 mm) across the eastern portions of \nthe islands of Cabo Verde on Friday and Saturday with less than 1 \ninch anticipated for the western side of the island chain. Across \ncoastal areas of Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, and Senegal, rain bands east \nof Gonzalo\u2019s track will produce another 1 to 2 inches of rainfall \n(25 to 50 mm) with isolated higher amounts along the immediate \ncoast. \n \nSURF: Swells generated by the storm are expected to affect the Cabo\nVerde Islands through Saturday. These swells are likely to cause\nlife-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
