A watch is typically issued 48 hours\nbefore the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force\nwinds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or\ndangerous.\n \nInterests elsewhere in the Hawaiian Islands should closely monitor\nthe progress of this system.\n \nFor storm information specific to your area, including possible\ninland watches and warnings, please monitor products issued by your\nlocal National Weather Service forecast office.\n \n \nDISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK\n----------------------\nAt 800 PM HST (0600 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Nolo was\nlocated near latitude 14.7 North, longitude 155.9 West. Nolo is \nmoving toward the west-northwest near 7 mph (11 km/h).  A sharp turn \nto the north and north-northeast is expected late tonight through \nThursday, with this motion continuing through the end of the week. \nOn the forecast track, the system is expected to approach the Big \nIsland of Hawaii on Friday and Saturday.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. \nNolo is forecast to become a hurricane by Thursday night and could \nbecome a major hurricane by the weekend.\n \nTropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km)\nfrom the center.\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 1002 mb (29.59 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Nolo can be found in the can be found in the\nTropical Cyclone Discussion under AWIPS header HFOTCDCP2 and WMO\nheader WTPA42 PHFO.\n \nWIND: Hurricane conditions are possible in the watch area starting\nas early as Friday night.\n \nRAINFALL: Tropical Storm Nolo will produce rainfall totals of 15 to\n20 inches across the Big Island with maximum amounts of 35 inches.\nThis rainfall may produce catastrophic life-threatening flooding and\nmudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain. Rainfall totals of\n5 to 10 inches with maximum amounts of 20 inches are expected across\nMaui. Life-threatening flooding and mudslides possible across Maui,\nespecially in areas of high terrain.
