A watch is typically issued 48 hours\nbefore the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force\nwinds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or\ndangerous.\n \nInterests elsewhere in the Hawaiian Islands should closely monitor\nthe progress of this system.\n \nFor storm information specific to your area, including possible\ninland watches and warnings, please monitor products issued by your\nlocal National Weather Service forecast office.\n \n \nDISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK\n----------------------\nAt 1100 AM HST (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Nolo was\nlocated near latitude 14.5 North, longitude 155.3 West. Nolo is\nmoving toward the west-northwest near 6 mph (9 km/h), and this \ngeneral motion is expected today. A sharp turn to the north and \nnorth-northeast is expected on Thursday, with this motion \ncontinuing through the end of the week. On the forecast track, the \nsystem is expected to approach the Big Island of Hawaii on Friday \nand Saturday.\n \nMaximum sustained winds have increased to near 40 mph (65 km/h) \nwith higher gusts.  Nolo is forecast to become a hurricane on \nThursday and could become a major hurricane by the weekend.\n \nTropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km)\nfrom the center.\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 1003 mb (29.62 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Nolo can be found in the can be found in the \nTropical Cyclone Discussion under AWIPS header HFOTCPCP2 and WMO \nheader WTPA42 PHFO.\n \nWIND: Hurricane conditions are possible in the watch area starting \nas early as late Friday.\n \nRAINFALL: Tropical Storm Nolo will produce rainfall totals of 15 to \n20 inches across the Big Island with maximum amounts of 35 inches. \nThis rainfall may produce catastrophic life-threatening flooding and \nmudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain. Rainfall totals of \n5 to 10 inches with maximum amounts of 20 inches expected across \nMaui. The water could\nreach the following heights above ground somewhere in the indicated\nareas if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide...\n\nHawaii County...1 to 3 ft \n\nThe deepest water will occur along the immediate coast near and to\nthe right of the landfall location, where the surge will be\naccompanied by large and dangerous waves.  Surge-related flooding \ndepends on the relative timing of the surge and the tidal cycle, \nand can vary greatly over short distances.
