Watches could be required for portions of the westernmost\nHawaiian Islands on Saturday.\n \n \nDISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK\n----------------------\nAt 1100 AM HST (2100 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Lowell was located\nnear latitude 13.2 North, longitude 160.7 West. Lowell is moving\ntoward the west-southwest near 7 mph (11 km/h). This general motion\nwith a gradual decrease in forward speed is expected during the next\nday or so, followed by a sharp turn to the north or north-northeast\non Sunday.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 150 mph (240 km/h) with higher\ngusts. Lowell is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson\nHurricane Wind Scale. Some additional intensification is possible,\nand Lowell could regain category 5 strength later today or tonight.\n \nHurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from the\ncenter and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 160 miles\n(260 km).\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure based on aircraft data is \n926 mb (27.35 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Lowell can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header HFOTCDCP4 and WMO header WTPA44\nPHFO.\n \nRAINFALL: Lowell is expected to produce rainfall totals of 3 to 6 \ninches, with maximum totals exceeding 10 inches possible, for Kauai \nand the Big Island. For Maui, 2 to 4 inches of rain is expected, \nwith isolated maximum totals of 8 inches possible. Across the \nremaining islands, rainfall of 1 to 2 inches with maximum amounts of \n4 inches is possible.
