Karina is \nmoving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h), followed by \na more westerly motion over the next day or two.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher \ngusts.  Strengthening is forecast during the next several days. \nKarina is forecast to become a hurricane within the next day and \ncould become a major hurricane early next week.\n \nTropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 230 miles (370 km)\nfrom the center. The Mexican Navy weather station on Clarion Island \nrecently reported a wind gust of 55 mph (88 km/h) in one of \nKarina's outer rain bands.\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 987 mb (29.15 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nSURF:  Swells generated by Karina will begin to affect portions of\nthe coast of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula\nthis weekend.  These swells are likely to cause life-threatening\nsurf and rip current conditions.
