Lala is \nmoving toward the northwest near 14 mph (22 km/h) but is expected to \nturn westward later today. A continued westward motion is forecast \nthrough Tuesday night. The core of the storm is forecast to remain \nsouth of the smaller main Hawaiian Islands and the easternmost \nNorthwestern Hawaiian Islands during the next couple of days.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher \ngusts. Slight additional weakening is expected during the next day \nor so. Some restrengthening is forecast by midweek.\n \nTropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km)\nfrom the center. A weather station (Ilio 1) on the northwestern \nportion of Molokai at an elevation of 175 ft recently reported a \nsustained wind of 53 mph (85 km/h) and a gust of 69 mph (111 km/h).\n \nThe estimated minimum central pressure is 991 mb (29.27 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Lala can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header HFOTCDCP2 and WMO header WTPA42 PHFO.\n \nWIND: Tropical storm conditions continue across portions of the Big\nIsland of Hawaii and Maui County, with the strongest winds occurring\nin areas of higher terrain. Tropical storm conditions will spread\nacross Oahu this morning and Kauai County later today. Wind speeds\natop mountains and on the windward and leeward slopes are often up\nto 30 percent stronger than the near-surface winds indicated in this\nadvisory, and in some elevated locations could be even greater.\n \nRAINFALL: Lala is expected to produce additional rainfall of 1 to 3\ninches across windward portions of the the Big Island and windward\nMaui, with maximum storm total of 30 to 35 inches over the windward\nBig Island. Across the remainder of the island chain total rainfall\nof 2 to 6 inches is expected, with the highest totals over windward\nKauai. This rainfall may produce life-threatening flooding and\nmudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain.\n \nFor a complete depiction of forecast rainfall associated with Lala,\nplease see the National Weather Service Storm Total Rainfall Graphic\navailable at hurricanes.gov/graphics_cp2.shtml?rainqpf\n \nFor a list of rainfall observations and wind reports associated with\nLala, see the companion storm summary at WBCSCCNS2 with the WMO\nheader ACUS42 KWBC or at the following link:\nwww.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/discussions/nfdscc2.html.\n \nSTORM SURGE: The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the\ntide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by\nrising waters moving inland from the shoreline. The water could\nreach the following heights above ground somewhere in the indicated\nareas if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide...\n \nOahu...1-2 ft\nKauai...1-2 ft\n \nThe deepest water will occur along the immediate coast, where the\nsurge will be accompanied by large and dangerous waves.\nSurge-related flooding depends on the relative timing of the surge\nand the tidal cycle, and can vary greatly over short distances. For\ninformation specific to your area, please see products issued by\nyour local National Weather Service forecast office.\n \nFor a complete depiction of areas at risk of storm surge inundation,\nplease see the National Weather Service Peak Storm Surge Graphic,\navailable at hurricanes.gov/graphics_cp2.shtml?peakSurge.\n \nSURF: Swells generated by Lala will continue to build westward\nacross the exposed windward waters today. Swells will also build\nover the exposed leeward waters as Lala passes south of the islands.\nThese swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip\ncurrent conditions. Please consult products from your local weather\noffice.\n \n \nNEXT ADVISORY\n-------------\nNext intermediate advisory at 800 AM HST.\nNext complete advisory at 1100 AM HST.\n \n"}
