Lala is\nmoving toward the west-northwest near 13 mph (20 km/h). This\ngeneral motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days,\ntaking the core of Lala near the South Point of the Big Island of\nHawaii on Saturday and then south of the smaller islands on Sunday.\n \nMaximum sustained winds are near 65 mph (100 km/h) with higher\ngusts. Steady strengthening is forecast, and Lala is expected to\nbecome a hurricane as it approaches the Big Island Saturday.\n \nTropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 220 miles (350 km)\nfrom the center.\n\nThe minimum central pressure based on data from an Air Force \nreconnaissance aircraft is 991 mb (29.27 inches).\n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Tropical Storm Lala can be found in the Tropical\nCyclone Discussion under AWIPS header HFOTCDCP2 and WMO header\nWTPA42 PHFO.\n \nWIND: Hurricane conditions are expected on the Big Island of Hawaii\non Saturday, with tropical storm conditions expected in Maui County\nSaturday night. Tropical storm conditions are expected on Oahu and\nKauai County by Sunday morning. Wind speeds atop mountains and on\nthe windward and leeward slopes are often up to 30 percent stronger\nthan the near-surface winds indicated in this advisory, and in some\nelevated locations could be even greater.\n \nRAINFALL: Tropical Storm Lala is expected to produce rainfall totals \nof 10 to 20 inches across the Big Island, with locally higher \namounts up to 25 inches possible. Rainfall totals of 8 to 12 inches \nare expected across Maui, with 4 to 6 inches and maximum amounts of \n8 inches expected across the remainder of the island chain. This \nrainfall may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, \nespecially in areas of steep terrain.\n \nFor a complete depiction of forecast rainfall associated with\nLala, please see the National Weather Service Storm Total Rainfall\nGraphic available at hurricanes.gov/graphics_cp2.shtml?rainqpf\n \nSTORM SURGE: The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the\ntide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by\nrising waters moving inland from the shoreline. The water could\nreach the following heights above ground somewhere in the indicated\nareas if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide...\n \nHawaii...1 to 3 ft\n \nThe deepest water will occur along the immediate coast, where the\nsurge will be accompanied by large and dangerous waves.\nSurge-related flooding depends on the relative timing of the surge\nand the tidal cycle, and can vary greatly over short distances. For\ninformation specific to your area, please see products issued by\nyour local National Weather Service forecast office.\n \nFor a complete depiction of areas at risk of storm surge\ninundation, please see the National Weather Service Peak\nStorm Surge Graphic, available at\nhurricanes.gov/graphics_cp2.shtml?peakSurge.\n \nSURF: Swells generated by Lala are steadily building along\neast-facing shores and will continue to increase through the\nweekend. Swells will also build along exposed southern shores as\nLala passes south of the islands. These swells are likely to cause\nlife-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult\nproducts from your local weather office.\n \n \nNEXT ADVISORY\n-------------\nNext intermediate advisory at 200 AM HST.\nNext complete advisory at 500 AM HST.\n \n"}
