A watch is typically issued 48 hours\nbefore the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force\nwinds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or\ndangerous.\n \nAdditional watches and warnings could be required later today.\n \nFor storm information specific to your area, including possible\ninland watches and warnings, please monitor products issued by your\nlocal National Weather Service forecast office.\n \n \nDISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK\n----------------------\nAt 1100 AM HST (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Lala was\nlocated near latitude 15.4 North, longitude 146.2 West. Lala is\nmoving toward the west-northwest near 9 mph (15 km/h). A faster\nwest-northwestward motion is expected during the next several\ndays. On the forecast track, Lala is forecast to be near or just\nsouth of the Big Island on Saturday, and pass south of the \nremainder of the islands later in the weekend.\n \nMaximum sustained winds have increased to near 45 mph (75 km/h) with \nhigher gusts. Steady strengthening is forecast, and Lala is \nexpected to become a hurricane as it approaches the Big Island.\n \nTropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles (335 km)\nfrom the center.\n \nThe minimum central pressure based on data from an Air Force \nreconnaissance aircraft is 1000 mb (29.53 inches).\n \n \nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Tropical Storm Lala can be found in the Tropical\nCyclone Discussion under AWIPS header HFOTCPCP2 and WMO header\nWTPA42 PHFO.\n \nWIND:  Hurricane conditions are possible in the Big Island of Hawaii\nby early Saturday.  Wind speeds atop and on the windward sides of\nhills and mountains are often up to 30 percent stronger than the\nnear-surface winds indicated in this advisory, and in some elevated\nlocations could be even greater.\n \nRAINFALL: Tropical Storm Lala is expected to produce rainfall totals\nof 5 to 10 inches across Maui and the Big Island with maximum totals\nof 25 inches possible across the Big Island.  Rainfall totals of 2\nto 4 inches with maximum amounts of 8 inches across the remainder of\nthe island chain. This rainfall may produce life-threatening\nflooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain.\n\nFor a complete depiction of forecast rainfall associated with\nLala, please see the National Weather Service Storm Total Rainfall\nGraphic available at hurricanes.gov/graphics_cp2.shtml?rainqpf \n \nSTORM SURGE:  The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the\ntide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by\nrising waters moving inland from the shoreline.  The water could\nreach the following heights above ground somewhere in the indicated\nareas if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide...\n \nHawaii...1 to 3 ft\n \nThe deepest water will occur along the immediate coast, where the\nsurge will be accompanied by large and dangerous waves.\nSurge-related flooding depends on the relative timing of the surge\nand the tidal cycle, and can vary greatly over short distances.  For\ninformation specific to your area, please see products issued by\nyour local National Weather Service forecast office.\n \nFor a complete depiction of areas at risk of storm surge\ninundation, please see the National Weather Service Peak\nStorm Surge Graphic, available at\nhurricanes.gov/graphics_cp2.shtml?peakSurge.\n \nSURF:  Swells generated by Lala are expected to reach the\neast-facing shores of the state on Friday, spreading westward\nand building through the weekend. These swells are likely to cause\nlife-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult\nproducts from your local weather office.\n \n \nNEXT ADVISORY\n-------------\nNext intermediate advisory at 200 PM HST.\nNext complete advisory at 500 PM HST.\n \n"}
